A New Project

11/14/12 at 11 AM, we lost our dog, Rocco, for 8 hours.
Those of you who have lost a loved one, even temporarily, know that 10 minutes of not knowing where s/he is or what s/he’s going through at that moment is an eternity. I spent those 8 hours tearing my house apart, checking and rechecking my backyard, the fence, the neighborhood. I knocked on doors. I called all the local vets. I walked through the local humane society. I cried my eyeballs out.
A funny thing happened: All my neighbors, some of them I hadn’t even met yet, joined forces to help me find Rocco. Everyone around me started looking. They told their friends and neighbors, who told their friends and neighbors, who told theirs.
At 7PM on the same day, I found Rocco, still in my very own house, locked in a basket I’d failed to check. I was too relieved to be embarrassed about my mistake, and I was and still am amazed by the outreach of my neighbors.
Since that day, I’ve cherished every moment with my dogs, and when I found someone elses little lost puppy in my yard just 5 days later, I wasted no time in finding the owner and returning her dog. These two events combined made me realize that if everyone reached out like that, all the worlds problems would be solved.
We can do that. Let’s try.
